He Will Tread Down Our Foes

To the choirmaster: according to aShushan Eduth. A bMiktam1 of David; cfor instruction; when he dstrove with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and when Joab on his return struck down twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.

O God, eyou have rejected us, fbroken our defenses;
you have been angry; goh, restore us.

2
You have made the land to quake; you have torn it open;
arepair its breaches, for it totters.

3
aYou have made your people see hard things;
byou have given us cwine to drink that made us stagger.

4
You have set up aa banner for those who fear you,
that they may flee to it bfrom the bow.1 Selah

5
aThat your bbeloved ones may be delivered,
give salvation by your right hand and answer us!

6
God has spoken ain his holiness:1
“With exultation bI will divide up cShechem
and portion out the Vale of dSuccoth.

7
aGilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;
bEphraim is cmy helmet;
Judah is my dscepter.

8
aMoab is my washbasin;
upon Edom I bcast my shoe;
over cPhilistia I shout in triumph.”1

9
Who will bring me to the fortified city?
aWho will lead me to Edom?

10
Have you not arejected us, O God?
You bdo not go forth, O God, with our armies.

11
Oh, grant us help against the foe,
for avain is the salvation of man!

12
With God we shall ado valiantly;
it is he who will btread down our foes.
