Psalm 79

How Long, O Lord?

A Psalm of aAsaph.

O God, bthe nations have come into your cinheritance;
they have defiled your dholy temple;
they have elaid Jerusalem in ruins.

2
They have given athe bodies of your servants
to the birds of the heavens for food,
the flesh of your bfaithful to cthe beasts of the earth.

3
They have poured out their blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there was ano one to bury them.

4
We have become aa taunt to our neighbors,
amocked and derided by those around us.

5
aHow long, O Lord? Will you be angry bforever?
Will your cjealousy dburn like fire?

6
aPour out your anger on the nations
that bdo not know you,
and on the kingdoms
that cdo not call upon your name!

7
For they have devoured Jacob
and laid waste his habitation.

8
aDo not remember against us bour former iniquities;1
let your compassion come speedily to meet us,
for we are cbrought very low.

9
aHelp us, O God of our salvation,
for the glory of your name;
deliver us, and batone for our sins,
for your cname’s sake!

10
aWhy should the nations say,
“Where is their God?”
Let bthe avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants
be known among the nations before our eyes!

11
Let athe groans of the prisoners come before you;
according to your great power, preserve those bdoomed to die!

12
Return asevenfold into the blap of our neighbors
the ctaunts with which they have taunted you, O Lord!

13
But we your people, the asheep of your pasture,
will bgive thanks to you forever;
from generation to generation we will recount your praise.
