Alliance with King Hiram
aNow Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon, when he heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father, for bHiram had always been a friend of David. 2 Then aSolomon sent word to Hiram, saying, 3 “You know that aDavid my father was unable to build a house for the name of the Lord his God because of the wars which surrounded him, until the Lord put them under the soles of his feet. 4 But now athe Lord my God has given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary nor misfortune. 5 Behold, aI intend to build a house for the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord spoke to David my father, saying, ‘Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place, he will build the house for My name.’ 6 Now therefore, command that they cut for me acedars from Lebanon, and my servants will be with your servants; and I will give you wages for your servants according to all that you say, for you know that there is no one among us who knows how to cut timber like the Sidonians.”
7 When Hiram heard the words of Solomon, he rejoiced greatly and said, “Blessed be the Lord today, who has given to David a wise son over this great people.” 8 So Hiram sent word to Solomon, saying, “I have heard the message which you have sent me; I will do what you desire concerning the cedar and cypress timber. 9 My servants will bring them down from Lebanon to the sea; and I will make them into rafts to go by sea ato the place where you direct me, and I will have them broken up there, and you shall carry them away. Then byou shall accomplish my desire by giving food to my household.” 10 So Hiram gave Solomon as much as he desired of the cedar and cypress timber. 11 aSolomon then gave Hiram 20,000 kors of wheat as food for his household, and twenty kors of beaten oil; thus Solomon would give Hiram year by year. 12 aThe Lord gave wisdom to Solomon, just as He promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a covenant.
Conscription of Laborers
13 Now aKing Solomon levied forced laborers from all Israel; and the forced laborers numbered 30,000 men. 14 He sent them to Lebanon, 10,000 a month in relays; they were in Lebanon a month and two months at home. And aAdoniram was over the forced laborers. 15 Now aSolomon had 70,000 transporters, and 80,000 hewers of stone in the mountains, 16 abesides Solomon’s 3,300 chief deputies who were over the project and who ruled over the people who were doing the work. 17 Then athe king commanded, and they quarried great stones, costly stones, to lay the foundation of the house with cut stones. 18 So Solomon’s builders and Hiram’s builders and athe Gebalites cut them, and prepared the timbers and the stones to build the house.

Solomon Will Build a Temple and Palace
aNow Solomon decided to build a house for the name of the Lord and a royal palace for himself. 2 So aSolomon assigned 70,000 men to carry loads and 80,000 men to quarry stone in the mountains and 3,600 to supervise them.
3 aThen Solomon sent word to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, “bAs you dealt with David my father and sent him cedars to build him a house to dwell in, so do for me. 4 Behold, I am about to build a house for the name of the Lord my God, dedicating it to Him, ato burn fragrant incense before Him and to set out bthe showbread continually, and to offer cburnt offerings morning and evening, don sabbaths and on new moons and on the appointed feasts of the Lord our God, this being required forever in Israel. 5 The house which I am about to build will be great, for agreater is our God than all the gods. 6 But awho is able to build a house for Him, for the heavens and the highest heavens cannot contain Him? So who am I, that I should build a house for Him, except to burn incense before Him? 7 Now asend me a skilled man to work in gold, silver, brass and iron, and in purple, crimson and violet fabrics, and who knows how to make engravings, to work with the skilled men bwhom I have in Judah and Jerusalem, whom David my father provided. 8 aSend me also cedar, cypress and algum timber from Lebanon, for I know that your servants know how to cut timber of Lebanon; and indeed bmy servants will work with your servants, 9 to prepare timber in abundance for me, for the house which I am about to build will be great and wonderful. 10 Now behold, aI will give to your servants, the woodsmen who cut the timber, 20,000 kors of crushed wheat and 20,000 kors of barley, and 20,000 baths of wine and 20,000 baths of oil.”
Huram to Assist
11 Then Huram, king of Tyre, answered in a letter sent to Solomon: “aBecause the Lord loves His people, He has made you king over them.” 12 Then Huram continued, “Blessed be athe Lord, the God of Israel, who has made heaven and earth, who has given King David a wise son, endowed with discretion and understanding, bwho will build a house for the Lord and a royal palace for himself.
13 “Now I am sending Huram-abi, a skilled man, endowed with understanding, 14 athe son of a Danite woman and a Tyrian father, who knows how to work in gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone and wood, and in purple, violet, linen and crimson fabrics, and who knows how to make all kinds of engravings and to execute any design which may be assigned to him, to work with your skilled men and with those of my lord David your father. 15 Now then, let my lord send to his servants wheat and barley, oil and wine, of awhich he has spoken. 16 aWe will cut whatever timber you need from Lebanon and bring it to you on rafts by sea to Joppa, so that you may carry it up to Jerusalem.”
17 Solomon numbered all the aliens who were in the land of Israel, afollowing the census which his father David had taken; and 153,600 were found. 18 aHe appointed 70,000 of them to carry loads and 80,000 to quarry stones in the mountains and 3,600 supervisors to make the people work.
2 Thessalonians 3
Exhortation
aFinally, brethren, bpray for us that cthe word of the Lord will spread rapidly and be glorified, just as it did also with you; 2 and that we will be arescued from perverse and evil men; for not all have faith. 3 But athe Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from bthe evil one. 4 We have aconfidence in the Lord concerning you, that you bare doing and will continue to do what we command. 5 May the Lord adirect your hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness of Christ.
6 Now we command you, brethren, ain the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you bkeep away from every brother who leads an cunruly life and not according to dthe tradition which you received from us. 7 For you yourselves know how you ought to afollow our example, because we did not act in an undisciplined manner among you, 8 nor did we aeat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with blabor and hardship we kept cworking night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you; 9 not because we do not have athe right to this, but in order to offer ourselves bas a model for you, so that you would follow our example. 10 For even awhen we were with you, we used to give you this order: bif anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either. 11 For we hear that some among you are aleading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like bbusybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and aexhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to bwork in quiet fashion and eat their own bread. 13 But as for you, abrethren, bdo not grow weary of doing good.
14 If anyone does not obey our instruction ain this letter, take special note of that person band do not associate with him, so that he will be cput to shame. 15 Yet ado not regard him as an enemy, but badmonish him as a cbrother.
16 Now amay the Lord of peace bHimself continually grant you peace in every circumstance. cThe Lord be with you all!
17 I, Paul, write this greeting awith my own hand, and this is a distinguishing mark in every letter; this is the way I write. 18 aThe grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
