Luke 6
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
aOn a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples bplucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, a“Why are you doing bwhat is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” 3 And Jesus answered them, a“Have you not read bwhat David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and took and ate athe bread of the Presence, awhich is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” 5 And he said to them, a“The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
A Man with a Withered Hand
6 On another Sabbath, ahe entered the synagogue band was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the Pharisees awatched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, bso that they might find a reason to accuse him. 8 But ahe knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, ais it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” 10 And aafter looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And bhe did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with afury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.
The Twelve Apostles
12 In these days ahe went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, ahe called his disciples band cchose from them twelve, whom he named dapostles: 14 Simon, awhom he named Peter, and bAndrew his brother, and bJames and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15 and aMatthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called bthe Zealot, 16 and aJudas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude
17 And ahe came down with them and stood on a level place, with ba great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of cTyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. aAnd those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd asought to touch him, for bpower came out from him and healed them all.
The Beatitudes
20 And ahe lifted up his eyes on his disciples, band said:
“Blessed are you who are poor, for cyours is the kingdom of God.
21 a“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.
b“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
22 “Blessed are you when apeople hate you and when they bexclude you and revile you and cspurn your name as evil, don account of the Son of Man! 23 aRejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for bso their fathers did to the prophets.
Jesus Pronounces Woes
24 a“But woe to you who are rich, bfor you chave received your consolation.
25 “Woe to you who are full now, for ayou shall be hungry.
“Woe to byou who laugh now, bfor you shall mourn and weep.
26 “Woe to you, awhen all people speak well of you, for bso their fathers did to cthe false prophets.
Love Your Enemies
27 “But I say to you who hear, aLove your enemies, bdo good to those who hate you, 28 abless those who curse you, bpray for those who abuse you. 29 aTo one who bstrikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. 30 aGive to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. 31 And aas you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.
32 a“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And aif you blend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But alove your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and byou will be sons of cthe Most High, for dhe is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 aBe merciful, even as byour Father is merciful.
Judging Others
37 ab“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; bforgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 agive, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put binto your lap. For cwith the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
39 He also told them a parable: a“Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 aA disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is bfully trained will be like his teacher. 41 aWhy do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but bdo not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit
43 “For ano good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for aeach tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 aThe good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces bevil, cfor out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Build Your House on the Rock
46 a“Why bdo you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 aEveryone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 aBut the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and bthe ruin of that house was great.”
