Matthew 28:1-10
Jesus Is Risen!
aNow after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, bMary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for aan angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away bthe stone and sat upon it. 3 And ahis appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4 And the guards quaked from fear of him and became like dead men. 5 And the angel answered and said to the women, “aDo not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. 6 He is not here, for He has risen, ajust as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. 7 And go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you ainto Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you.”
8 And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him. 10 Then Jesus *said to them, “aDo not be afraid; go and report to bMy brothers to leave cfor Galilee, and there they will see Me.”
Matthew 28:16-20
The Great Commission
16 But the eleven disciples proceeded ato Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. 17 And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but asome doubted. 18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “aAll authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 aGo therefore and bmake disciples of call the nations, dbaptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to keep all that I commanded you; and behold, aI am with you always, even to bthe end of the age.”
Luke 24:1-51
Jesus Is Risen!
aNow on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of athe Lord Jesus. 4 And it happened that while they were perplexed about this, behold, atwo men suddenly bstood near them in dazzling clothing, 5 and when the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? 6 He is not here, but He ahas risen. Remember how He spoke to you bwhile He was still in Galilee, 7 saying that athe Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” 8 And athey remembered His words, 9 and when they returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now aMary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the rest of the women with them were there; they were telling these things to bthe apostles. 11 But these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they awere not believing them. 12 But Peter stood up and aran to the tomb; and stooping to look in, he *saw the linen wrappings only. And he went away bby himself, marveling at what had happened.
The Road to Emmaus
13 And behold, atwo of them were going that same day to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia from Jerusalem. 14 And they were conversing with each other about all these things which had happened. 15 And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus Himself approached and was going with them. 16 But atheir eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. 17 And He said to them, “What are these words that you are discussing with one another as you are walking?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 And one of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, “Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?” 19 And He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “The things about aJesus the Nazarene, who was a mighty bprophet in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our arulers delivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to aredeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened. 22 But also some women among us astounded us. aWhen they were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and not finding His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also said, but Him they did not see.” 25 And He said to them, “O foolish ones and slow of heart to believe in all that athe prophets have spoken! 26 aWas it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?” 27 Then beginning with aMoses and with all the bprophets, He interpreted to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
28 And they approached the village where they were going, and aHe acted as though He were going farther. 29 But they urged Him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is now nearly over.” So He went in to stay with them. 30 And it happened that when He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and ablessed it, and after breaking it, He was giving it to them. 31 Then their aeyes were opened and they recognized Him. And He vanished from their sight. 32 And they said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He awas opening the Scriptures to us?” 33 And they stood up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and afound gathered together the eleven and bthose with them, 34 who were saying, “aThe Lord has really risen and bhas appeared to Simon.” 35 And they were relating their experiences on the road and how aHe was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
36 Now while they were telling these things, aHe Himself stood in their midst and *said to them, “Peace to you.” 37 But being startled and frightened, they were thinking that they were seeing aa spirit. 38 And He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 aSee My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; btouch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 And while they still awere not believing because of their joy and were still marveling, He said to them, “bHave you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish, 43 and He took it and aate it before them.
44 Now He said to them, “aThese are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the bLaw of Moses and the Prophets and cthe Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He aopened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and He said to them, “aThus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and brise again from the dead the third day, 47 and that arepentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to ball the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are awitnesses of these things. 49 And behold, aI am sending the promise of My Father upon you, but byou are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
The Ascension
50 And He led them out as far as aBethany, and lifting up His hands, He blessed them. 51 And it happened that while He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.
John 20:1
The Empty Tomb
aNow on the first day of the week, bMary Magdalene *came early to the tomb, while it *was still dark, and *saw cthe stone already taken away from the tomb.
John 20:2
2 So she *ran and *came to Simon Peter and to the other adisciple whom Jesus loved, and *said to them, “bThey have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”
John 20:11-29
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
11 aBut Mary was standing outside the tomb crying; and so, as she was crying, she bstooped to look into the tomb; 12 and she *saw atwo angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13 And they *said to her, “aWoman, why are you crying?” She *said to them, “Because bthey have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” 14 When she had said this, she turned around and *asaw Jesus standing there, and bdid not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus *said to her, “aWoman, why are you crying? Whom are you seeking?” Thinking Him to be the gardener, she *said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” 16 Jesus *said to her, “Mary!” She turned and *said to Him ain Hebrew, “bRabboni!” (which means, Teacher). 17 Jesus *said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to aMy brothers and say to them, ‘I bascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” 18 aMary Magdalene *came, bannouncing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
19 So while it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and while the doors were shut where the disciples were, for afear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and *said to them, “bPeace be with you.” 20 And when He had said this, aHe showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then brejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “aPeace be with you; bas the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He abreathed on them and *said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 aIf you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”
24 But aThomas, one of bthe twelve, called aDidymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in aHis hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, bI will not believe.”
26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus *came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “aPeace be with you.” 27 Then He *said to Thomas, “aBring your finger here, and see My hands; and bring your hand here and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” 28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus *said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? aBlessed are those who did not see, and yet believed.”
