The Plot to Kill Jesus

1aNow it happened that when Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples,
2 “aYou know that after two days bthe Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be cdelivered over for crucifixion.”
3 aThen the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in bthe court of the high priest, named cCaiaphas;
4 and they aplotted together to seize Jesus by stealth and kill Him. 5 But they were saying, “Not during the festival, alest a riot occur among the people.”

The Costly Perfume

6 aNow when Jesus was in bBethany, at the home of Simon the leper,
7 aa woman came to Him with an alabaster jar of very costly perfume, and she poured it on His head as He reclined at the table. 8 But when the disciples saw this, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? 9 For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you bother the woman? For she has done a good work to Me. 11 For you always have athe poor with you; but you do not always have Me. 12 For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it ato prepare Me for burial. 13 Truly I say to you, awherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”

Judas Looks to Betray Jesus

14 aThen one of the twelve, named bJudas Iscariot, went to the chief priests
15 and said, “What are you willing to give me 1to adeliver Him to you?” And bthey weighed out 2thirty pieces of silver to him. 16 And from then on he began looking for a good opportunity to 1betray 2Jesus.

2 And the chief priests and the scribes awere seeking how they might put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people.
3 aAnd bSatan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, who 1belonged to the number of the twelve.
4 And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and aofficers how he might betray Him to them. 5 And they were glad and agreed to give him money. 6 So he consented, and began seeking a good opportunity to betray Him to them 1apart from the crowd.

John 12:1-11

Mary Anoints Jesus with Costly Perfume

aJesus, therefore, six days before bthe Passover, came to cBethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
2 So they made Him a supper there, and aMartha was serving; and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. 3 aMary then took a 1litra of bperfume of very costly pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But aJudas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was going to 1betray Him, *said, 5 “Why was this perfume not sold for 1three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he ahad the money box, he used to take from bwhat was put into it. 7 Therefore Jesus said, “Let her alone, so that she may keep it for athe day of My burial. 8 aFor you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”
9 Then the alarge crowd from the Jews learned that He was there. And they came, not because of Jesus only, but that they might also see Lazarus, bwhom He raised from the dead.
10 But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also; 11 because aon account of him bmany of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.
