1 Samuel 18-19

Jonathan and David

Now it came about when he had finished speaking to Saul, that ^athe soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and ^bJonathan loved him as himself. 2 Saul took him that day and ^adid not let him return to his father’s house. 3 Then ^aJonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. 4 ^aJonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, including his sword and his bow and his belt. 5 So David went out wherever Saul sent him, and ¹prospered; and Saul set him over the men of war. And it was pleasing in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
6 It happened as they were coming, when David returned from killing the Philistine, that ^athe women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with joy and with ¹musical instruments. 7 The women ^asang as they ¹played, and said,

“^bSaul has slain his thousands,

^cAnd David his ten thousands.”

8 Then Saul became very angry, for this saying ¹displeased him; and he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, but to me they have ascribed thousands. Now ^awhat more can he have but the kingdom?” 9 Saul looked at David with suspicion from that day on.

Saul Turns against David

10 Now it came about on the next day that ^aan evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul, and ^bhe raved in the midst of the house, while David was playing the harp with his hand, ¹^cas usual; and ²^da spear was in Saul’s hand. 11 ^aSaul hurled the spear for he thought, “I will ¹pin David to the wall.” But David ²escaped from his presence twice.
12 Now ^aSaul was afraid of David, ^bfor the Lord was with him but ^chad departed from Saul. 13 Therefore Saul removed him from ¹his presence and appointed him as his commander of a thousand; and ^ahe went out and came in before the people. 14 David was ¹prospering in all his ways for ^athe Lord was with him. 15 When Saul saw that he was ¹prospering greatly, he dreaded him. 16 But ^aall Israel and Judah loved David, and he went out and came in before them.
17 Then Saul said to David, “^aHere is my older daughter Merab; I will give her to you as a wife, only be a valiant man for me and fight ^bthe Lord’s battles.” For Saul thought, “My hand shall not be against him, but ^clet the hand of the Philistines be against him.” 18 But David said to Saul, “^aWho am I, and what is my life or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be the king’s son-in-law?” 19 So it came about at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David, that she was given to ^aAdriel ^bthe Meholathite for a wife.

David Marries Saul’s Daughter

20 Now ^aMichal, Saul’s daughter, loved David. When they told Saul, the thing was agreeable ¹to him. 21 Saul thought, “I will give her to him that she may become a snare to him, and ^athat the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David, “^bFor a second time you may be my son-in-law today.” 22 Then Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David secretly, saying, ‘Behold, the king delights in you, and all his servants love you; now therefore, become the king’s son-in-law.’” 23 So Saul’s servants spoke these words ¹to David. But David said, “Is it trivial in your sight to become the king’s son-in-law, ^asince I am a poor man and lightly esteemed?” 24 The servants of Saul reported to him ¹according to these words which David spoke. 25 Saul then said, “Thus you shall say to David, ‘The king does not desire any ^adowry except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, ^bto take vengeance on the king’s enemies.’” Now ^cSaul planned to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. 26 When his servants told David these words, ¹it pleased David to become the king’s son-in-law. ²^aBefore the days had expired 27 David rose up and went, ^ahe and his men, and struck down two hundred men among the Philistines. Then ^bDavid brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law. So Saul gave him Michal his daughter for a wife. 28 When Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him, 29 then Saul was even more afraid of David. Thus Saul was David’s enemy continually.
30 Then the commanders of the Philistines ^awent out to battle, and it happened as often as they went out, that David ^bbehaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul. So his name was highly esteemed.

David Protected from Saul

Now Saul told Jonathan his son and all his servants ^ato put David to death. But ^bJonathan, Saul’s son, greatly delighted in David. 2 So Jonathan told David saying, “Saul my father is seeking to put you to death. Now therefore, please be on guard in the morning, and stay in a secret place and hide yourself. 3 I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak with my father about you; ^aif I ¹find out anything, then I will tell you.” 4 Then Jonathan ^aspoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “^bDo not let the king sin against his servant David, since he has not sinned against you, and since his deeds have been very ¹beneficial to you. 5 For ^ahe took his life in his hand and struck the Philistine, and ^bthe Lord brought about a great deliverance for all Israel; you saw it and rejoiced. ^cWhy then will you sin against innocent blood by putting David to death without a cause?” 6 Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan, and Saul vowed, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be put to death.” 7 Then Jonathan called David, and Jonathan told him all these words. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as ^aformerly.
8 When there was war again, David went out and fought with the Philistines and ¹defeated them with great slaughter, so that they fled before him. 9 Now there was ^aan evil spirit from the Lord on Saul as he was sitting in his house ^bwith his spear in his hand, ^cand David was playing the harp with his hand. 10 ^aSaul tried to ¹pin David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, so that he ²stuck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.
11 Then ^aSaul sent messengers to David’s house to watch him, in order to put him to death in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife, told him, saying, “If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be put to death.” 12 ^aSo Michal let David down through a window, and he went out and fled and escaped. 13 Michal took ^athe ¹household idol and laid it on the bed, and put a quilt of goats’ hair at its head, and covered it with clothes. 14 When Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, “^aHe is sick.” 15 Then Saul sent messengers to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me on ¹his bed, that I may put him to death.” 16 When the messengers entered, behold, the ¹household idol was on the bed with the quilt of goats’ hair at its head. 17 So Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me like this and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?” And Michal said to Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go! ^aWhy should I put you to death?’”
18 Now David fled and escaped and came ^ato Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and stayed in ^bNaioth. 19 It was told Saul, saying, “Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.” 20 Then ^aSaul sent messengers to take David, but when they saw ^bthe company of the prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing and presiding over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul; and ^cthey also prophesied. 21 When it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. So Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied. 22 Then he himself went to Ramah and came as far as the large well that is in Secu; and he asked and said, “Where are Samuel and David?” And someone said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.” 23 He ¹proceeded there to Naioth in Ramah; and ^athe Spirit of God came upon him also, so that he went along prophesying continually until he came to Naioth in Ramah. 24 He also stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and ¹lay down ²^anaked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, “^bIs Saul also among the prophets?”

Family of David

^aNow these were the sons of David who were born to him in Hebron: the firstborn was Amnon, by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second was Daniel, by Abigail the Carmelitess; 2 the third was Absalom the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; the fourth was Adonijah the son of Haggith; 3 the fifth was Shephatiah, by Abital; the sixth was Ithream, by his wife Eglah. 4 Six were born to him in Hebron, and ^athere he reigned seven years and six months. And in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years. 5 ^aThese were born to him in Jerusalem: Shimea, Shobab, Nathan and ^bSolomon, four, by ^cBath-shua the daughter of Ammiel; 6 and Ibhar, Elishama, Eliphelet, 7 Nogah, Nepheg and Japhia, 8 Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet, nine. 9 All these were the sons of David, besides the sons of the concubines; and ^aTamar was their sister.
10 Now Solomon’s son was Rehoboam, Abijah was his son, Asa his son, Jehoshaphat his son, 11 Joram his son, Ahaziah his son, Joash his son, 12 Amaziah his son, Azariah his son, Jotham his son, 13 Ahaz his son, Hezekiah his son, Manasseh his son, 14 Amon his son, Josiah his son. 15 The sons of Josiah were Johanan the firstborn, and the second was Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, the fourth Shallum. 16 The sons of Jehoiakim were Jeconiah his son, Zedekiah his son. 17 The sons of Jeconiah, the prisoner, were Shealtiel his son, 18 and Malchiram, Pedaiah, Shenazzar, Jekamiah, Hoshama and Nedabiah. 19 The sons of Pedaiah were Zerubbabel and Shimei. And the ¹sons of Zerubbabel were Meshullam and Hananiah, and Shelomith was their sister; 20 and Hashubah, Ohel, Berechiah, Hasadiah and Jushab-hesed, five. 21 The ¹sons of Hananiah were Pelatiah and Jeshaiah, the sons of Rephaiah, the sons of Arnan, the sons of Obadiah, the sons of Shecaniah. 22 The ¹descendants of Shecaniah were Shemaiah, and the sons of Shemaiah: Hattush, Igal, Bariah, Neariah and Shaphat, six. 23 The ¹sons of Neariah were Elioenai, Hizkiah and Azrikam, three. 24 The sons of Elioenai were Hodaviah, Eliashib, Pelaiah, Akkub, Johanan, Delaiah and Anani, seven.

Psalm 59

Prayer for Deliverance from Enemies.

For the choir director; set to ¹Al-tashheth. A ²Mikhtam of David, ³when Saul sent men and they watched the house in order to kill him.

^aDeliver me from my enemies, O my God;

⁴^bSet me securely on high away from those who rise up against me.

Deliver me from ^athose who do iniquity

And save me from ^bmen of bloodshed.

For behold, they ^ahave ¹set an ambush for my ²life;

³Fierce men ⁴^alaunch an attack against me,

^bNot for my transgression nor for my sin, O Lord,

¹^aFor no guilt of mine, they run and set themselves against me.

^bArouse Yourself to ²help me, and see!

You, ^aO Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel,

Awake to ¹^bpunish all the nations;

^cDo not be gracious to any who are treacherous in iniquity. ²Selah.

They ^areturn at evening, they howl like a ^bdog,

And go around the city.

Behold, they ^abelch forth with their mouth;

^bSwords are in their lips,

For, they say, “^cWho hears?”

But You, O Lord, ^alaugh at them;

You ^bscoff at all the nations.

Because of ¹his ^astrength I will watch for You,

For God is my ^bstronghold.

¹My God ^ain His lovingkindness will meet me;

God will let me ^blook triumphantly upon ²my foes.

Do not slay them, ^aor my people will forget;

¹^bScatter them by Your power, and bring them down,

O Lord, ^cour shield.

¹On account of the ^asin of their mouth and the words of their lips,

Let them even be ^bcaught in their pride,

And on account of ^ccurses and ²lies which they utter.

¹^aDestroy them in wrath, ¹destroy them that they may be no more;

That men may ^bknow that God ²rules in Jacob

To the ends of the earth. Selah.

They ^areturn at evening, they howl like a dog,

And go around the city.

They ^awander about ¹for food

And ²growl if they are not satisfied.

But as for me, I shall ^asing of Your strength;

Yes, I shall ^bjoyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the ^cmorning,

For You have been my ^dstronghold

And a ^erefuge in the day of my distress.

^aO my strength, I will sing praises to You;

For God is my ^bstronghold, the ¹God who shows me lovingkindness.

Acts 13

First Missionary Journey

Now there were at ^aAntioch, in the ^bchurch that was there, ^cprophets and ^dteachers: ^eBarnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of ^fCyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with ^gHerod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, ^athe Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me ^bBarnabas and Saul for ^cthe work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, when they had fasted and ^aprayed and ^blaid their hands on them, ^cthey sent them away.
4 So, being ^asent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there they sailed to ^bCyprus. 5 When they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in ^athe synagogues of the Jews; and they also had ^bJohn as their helper. 6 When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a ^amagician, a Jewish ^bfalse prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus, 7 who was with the ^aproconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the ^amagician (for so his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the ^bproconsul away from ^cthe faith. 9 But Saul, who was also known as Paul, ¹^afilled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him, 10 and said, “You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you ^ason of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked ^bthe straight ways of the Lord? 11 Now, behold, ^athe hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and not see the sun for a time.” And immediately a mist and a darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those who would lead him by the hand. 12 Then the ^aproconsul believed when he saw what had happened, being amazed at ^bthe teaching of the Lord.
13 Now Paul and his companions put out to sea from ^aPaphos and came to ^bPerga in ^cPamphylia; but ^dJohn left them and returned to Jerusalem. 14 But going on from Perga, they arrived at ^aPisidian ^bAntioch, and on ^cthe Sabbath day they went into ^dthe synagogue and sat down. 15 After ^athe reading of the Law and ^bthe Prophets ^cthe synagogue officials sent to them, saying, “Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it.” 16 Paul stood up, and ^amotioning with his hand said,
“Men of Israel, and ^byou who fear God, listen: 17 The God of this people Israel ^achose our fathers and ¹^bmade the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm ^cHe led them out from it. 18 For ^aa period of about forty years ^bHe put up with them in the wilderness. 19 ^aWhen He had destroyed ^bseven nations in the land of Canaan, He ^cdistributed their land as an inheritance⁠—all of which took ^dabout four hundred and fifty years. 20 After these things He ^agave them judges until ^bSamuel the prophet. 21 Then they ^aasked for a king, and God gave them ^bSaul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. 22 After He had ^aremoved him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘^bI have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My ¹will.’ 23 ^aFrom the descendants of this man, ^baccording to promise, God has brought to Israel ^ca Savior, Jesus, 24 after ^aJohn had proclaimed before ¹His coming a ^bbaptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And while John ^awas completing his course, ^bhe kept saying, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. But behold, one is coming after me the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’
26 “Brethren, sons of Abraham’s family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of ^athis salvation has been sent. 27 For those who live in Jerusalem, and their ^arulers, ^brecognizing neither Him nor the ¹utterances of ^cthe prophets which are ^dread every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning Him. 28 And though they found no ground for putting Him to death, they ^aasked Pilate that He be ¹executed. 29 When they had ^acarried out all that was written concerning Him, ^bthey took Him down from ^cthe ¹cross and ^dlaid Him in a tomb. 30 But God ^araised Him from the dead; 31 and for many days ^aHe appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now ^bHis witnesses to the people. 32 And we ^apreach to you the good news of ^bthe promise made to the fathers, 33 that God has fulfilled this promise ¹to our children in that He ^araised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, ‘^bYou are My Son; today i have begotten You.’ 34 As for the fact that He ^araised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: ‘^bI will give you the holy and ¹sure blessings of David.’ 35 Therefore He also says in another Psalm, ‘^aYou will not ¹allow Your ²Holy One to ³undergo decay.’ 36 For ^aDavid, after he had ¹served ^bthe purpose of God in his own generation, ^cfell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and ²underwent decay; 37 but He whom God ^araised did not ¹undergo decay. 38 Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that ^athrough ¹Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 39 and ¹through Him ^aeveryone who believes is ²freed ³from all things, from which you could not be ²freed ³through the Law of Moses. 40 Therefore take heed, so that the thing spoken of ^ain the Prophets may not come upon you:
41

‘^aBehold, you scoffers, and marvel, and ¹perish;

For I am accomplishing a work in your days,

A work which you will never believe, though someone should describe it to you.’”

42 As ¹Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these ²things might be spoken to them the next ^aSabbath. 43 Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the ^aGod-fearing ¹^bproselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in ^cthe grace of God.

Paul Turns to the Gentiles

44 The next ^aSabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of ¹the Lord. 45 But when ^athe Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were ¹blaspheming. 46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you ^afirst; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, ^bwe are turning to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us,

‘^aI have placed You as a ^blight for the Gentiles,

That You may ¹bring salvation to the end of the earth.’”

48 When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying ^athe word of ¹the Lord; and as many as ^bhad been appointed to eternal life believed. 49 And ^athe word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region. 50 But ^athe Jews incited the ¹^bdevout women ^cof prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their ²district. 51 But ^athey shook off the dust of their feet in protest against them and went to ^bIconium. 52 And the disciples were continually ^afilled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
