Birth of Jesus Foretold
26 In the sixth month the angel aGabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named bNazareth, 27 ato a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, bof the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, aO favored one, bthe Lord is with you!” 29 But ashe was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for ayou have found favor with God. 31 And behold, ayou will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and byou shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of athe Most High. And the Lord God bwill give to him the throne of chis father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob aforever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”
35 And the angel answered her, a“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of bthe Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called choly—dthe Son of God. 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her awho was called barren. 37 For anothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And athe angel departed from her.

The Birth of Jesus Christ
In those days aa decree went out from bCaesar Augustus that all the world should be cregistered. 2 This was the first aregistration when Quirinius bwas governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up afrom Galilee, from the town of bNazareth, to Judea, to cthe city of David, which is called dBethlehem, ebecause he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And awhile they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and awrapped him in swaddling cloths and blaid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in cthe inn.

The Visit of the Wise Men
Now aafter Jesus was born in bBethlehem of Judea cin the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from dthe east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born aking of the Jews? For we saw bhis star when it rose and have come to cworship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where athe Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
6 a“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who will bshepherd my people Israel.’”
7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, athey offered him gifts, bgold and cfrankincense and dmyrrh. 12 And abeing warned bin a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
