Luke 1:26-38

Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 In the sixth month the angel ^aGabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named ^bNazareth, 27 ^ato a virgin betrothed¹ to a man whose name was Joseph, ^bof the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, ^aO favored one, ^bthe Lord is with you!”¹ 29 But ^ashe was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for ^ayou have found favor with God. 31 And behold, ^ayou will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and ^byou shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of ^athe Most High. And the Lord God ^bwill give to him the throne of ^chis father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob ^aforever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”¹
35 And the angel answered her, ^a“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of ^bthe Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born¹ will be called ^choly⁠—^dthe Son of God. 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her ^awho was called barren. 37 For ^anothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant¹ of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And ^athe angel departed from her.

Luke 1:67-79

Zechariah’s Prophecy

67 And his father Zechariah ^awas filled with the Holy Spirit and ^bprophesied, saying,

68

^a“Blessed be the Lord ^bGod of Israel,

for he has ^cvisited and ^dredeemed his people

and ^ahas raised up ^ba horn of salvation for us

^cin the house of his servant David,

^aas ^bhe spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,

^athat we should be saved from our enemies

and from the hand of all who hate us;

^ato show the mercy promised to our fathers

and ^bto remember his holy ^ccovenant,

^athe oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us

that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,

might serve him ^awithout fear,

^ain holiness and righteousness before him ^ball our days.

And you, child, will be called ^athe prophet of ^bthe Most High;

for ^cyou will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,

to give knowledge of salvation to his people

^ain the forgiveness of their sins,

because of the ^atender mercy of our God,

whereby ^bthe sunrise shall ^cvisit us¹ ^dfrom on high

to ^agive light to ^bthose who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,

to guide our feet into ^cthe way of ^dpeace.”
